Rahul Gandhi Appointed Leader of Opposition After a Decade-Long Gap

In a significant political development, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been appointed the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, marking the first time in 10 years that the position is being officially filled. The move comes after the Congress party secured over 100 seats in the 2024 general elections, crossing the minimum threshold required to claim the post.

This appointment signals a crucial shift in the political dynamics of the country. Rahul Gandhi, who led a vigorous campaign focusing on issues such as unemployment, inflation, and social justice, has seen a resurgence in both political stature and public perception. His elevation to this constitutional position is being viewed as a consolidation of opposition forces against the ruling NDA government.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge welcomed the development, calling it “a victory for democratic balance.” Leaders of the INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, expressed confidence that Gandhi would voice people’s concerns with renewed strength and purpose in Parliament.

Political analysts suggest this move may reinvigorate parliamentary debates, ensuring more robust scrutiny of government actions. As Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi is also expected to be part of key decision-making panels, including those appointing the CBI Director and Lokpal.

This marks a new chapter in Rahul Gandhi’s political journey and repositions the Congress as a stronger force in national politics.

While the Court reiterated that same-sex marriages remain outside the ambit of current legal frameworks — a position it had taken in an earlier 2023 ruling — it firmly asserted that the right to choose a partner and live with them is fundamental and cannot be denied b...
